CLASS DESCRIPTIONS

Classical Ballet

Ballet develops technique, strength, control and grace. The techniques learnt in ballet are essential for all dancers, no matter what their speciality is. It is necessary for any student wanting to become a talented dancer. Our classes focus on correct ballet technique and incorporate dance and ballet theory, as well as artistic expression appropriate to the level. We follow the EDTA syllabus and exams are optional.

Contemporary (Modern/Lyrical) Dance

Although based on Classical Ballet, this form of dance allows more movement and freedom. There are two main areas- one focusing on line, sharp angles and abstract movement and one focusing on fluidity, soft lines and physical expression of the music. Music for this style of dance includes: Coldplay, Bond, Enigma, James Morrison etc.

Jazz

One of the most popular styles! Jazz is energetic and expressive, showing attitude and personality, improving coordination, flexibility, muscle tone and fitness levels. this is the style where students will develop the widest range of skills. Music choices for this style of dance are wide and varied including: Pop, Funk, Light Rock, Blues and Broadway. Artists that regularly use the Jazz style are Britney Spears, Kylie Minogue and Madonna.

Tap

The most stylish form of dance where you can 'hear' your progress. Tap is all about rhythm and co-ordination and is perfect for aspiring Hot Shoe Shufflers. The EDTA Syllabus is taught and examinations are available enabling students to advance to the next level. Students learn a range of styles including traditional, broadway and street tap.

Drama

Drama enhances self-esteem, communication skills, concentration, discipline, diction, voice projections, vocal variation, body movement, cooperation and teamwork. Topics covered are improvisation, accents, drama games, scriptwriting, physical performance, character work and more! Students have the opportunity to participate in EDTA Examinations, EDTA Festivals and the Annual Singing and Drama Concert.

Adult Tap and Jazz Classes

It’s never too late to start! Choose one or both! Blakehurst Academy provides a relaxed environment in which adult students can learn Jazz and/or Tap! Students will be taught the latest moves at a pace that is easy to pick up and fun to perform. You will improve co-ordination, fitness and strength, plus it's a great way to make new friends! Jazz and Tap shoes are essential but you may wear whatever you wish to class.

Singing

Students will be taught performance technique (pitch, control, breathing), performance style, how to relate to your audience, general music industry knowledge, and be taught contemporary and modern songs using a wide range of backing tracks. Individual lessons or group classes are available. Students have the opportunity to perform in our annual 'BAPA Idol' Competition and Singing and Drama Concert.

Hip Hop

A combination of street funk and hip hop style dance. Complete with warm up and stretching, Hip Hop/ Funk is fun and energetic. With a mix of flavours and influences this class is guaranteed to make you really want to dance. Hip Hop is seen in numerous film clips and hit movies such as 'You Got Served' and 'Step Up'. At Blakehurst Academy, we always use inoffensive music and keep the movements appropriate for the age group.

Musical Theatre (Song & Dance)

Musical Theatre is for the ultimate triple threat performer. Sing, Dance, Act! Learn about, sing and dance to the broadway classics like 'Fosse', '42nd Street', 'West Side Story' as well as more modern productions like 'Chicago', 'The Lion King', and many more! Learn how to strut your stuff and shine on stage performing to the greats! The students work on character development, musicality, performance techniques and stage presence. Don't worry if you're not a great singer - we use the original songs to sing with in most cases.

Tinytots

A very popular combination class of ballet and jazz. It is the perfect introduction to the world of dance and movement. In this class, students learn basic ballet and jazz movements and are able to develop their musicality and co-ordination in a fun environment. Always a class full of many smiles!

Fitness

Lose weight, increase your energy and fitness, tone your muscles - this class is set up as a circuit, using hand weights, medicine balls, boxing equipment and body weight exercises. Finishing with abdominal work and a stretch - the whole class is set to music and conducted in a fun and energetic environment.

Boys JFH (Jazz/Funk/Hip Hop)

Boys only! This class provides an opportunity for the guys to work on their dance skills in a comfortable environment. Focusing on a more masculine style of Jazz/Funk/Hip Hop, the Boys JFH class is carefully designed to suit the needs of young male dancers.

Stretch

This class combines Static and PNF stretching to improve students flexibility as well as incorporating Pilates and Yoga movements to further develop and strengthen the body. This class will benefit all dancers but particularly those that do Ballet.
